From Forest to Furniture: An Afternoon Among the Trees

A walk through Frederiksdal Storskov with forester Andreas Deltorp and master cabinetmaker Malte Gormsen on local timber, drying and Danish craftsmanship, ending at Frederiksdal Bådebyggeri og Snedkeri.

Where does a piece of furniture begin? Not at the workbench, we’d argue, but long before that, in the forest. So on Tuesday we invited a group of architects and interior designers to spend an autumn afternoon with us in Frederiksdal Storskov, just north of Copenhagen, and follow timber back to where its journey starts. It turned out to be an afternoon of fresh air, good company and plenty to talk about.

Into the forest

Andreas Deltorp, our operations manager and a trained forester, led a walk of around four kilometres through Frederiksdal Storskov and along the shores of Lake Furesø. Along the way he took us through the history of Danish forestry: what has been grown here over the centuries, how Denmark’s forests are managed today, and what the future may hold for them.

We stopped beneath some of the largest trees in the country and looked at them not only as a natural resource, but as a living material that may one day become a table, a cabinet or a kitchen.

Thank you for an inspiring day in lovely company, with trees, fellow professionals and all of you!

Local timber, one step at a time

Our timber comes from a number of sources. Some of it is grown in Danish forests close to home, including Frederiksdal. It’s still a small share of what we use, but it’s a share we would like to grow. The local timber we dry ourselves before it reaches our workshop in Herlev, which means we know the material from the very beginning.

For us, sustainability is less about grand claims and more about knowing where your material comes from, using it with care and building things to last. The walk was also a chance to learn where we could do more.

Ending at the boatyard

The day ended at Frederiksdal Bådebyggeri og Snedkeri, a historic boatyard and joinery on the Mølleå river, usually only seen by those who arrive by water. Here Malte Gormsen told the story of the place and of the timber’s onward journey, from the forest at Frederiksdal to our workshop in Herlev.

Supper was soup from our good friend Bo Bech and his restaurant BoBe, where we made the interior. Seated in well-made furniture, there was time to talk, catch up and meet colleagues from across the industry.

Bespoke joinery and furniture for homes and commercial projects

Since 1999 we have designed and made bespoke joinery for private homes and commercial projects: kitchens, shelving, wardrobes, sliding doors and furniture, each shaped around the room and the brief. Alongside this sits our own furniture collection, Malte Gormsen Kollektion, developed with Space Copenhagen, Norm Architects and Christian+Jade, among others. Many pieces in the Kollektion can be adapted to suit a specific project.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the forest. We look forward to the next one.
